If a patient hit their leg and a blood filled blister developed, then went to doctor and had an I&D done. Is this wound then considered a surgical wound since it had a procedure done to it, or is it considered an open wound? This patient has been coming back to the facility to have debridement procedures done.

Are there any good resources that would clarify wound care coding with ICD 10?

Thanks

It is not a surgical wound, it is the original wound that had a procedure and now has aftercare. So you code the wound code with a D for the follow up visits.

Surgical aftercare

We code these with surgical aftercare Z44.817, if there are no other complications, because the wound has changed from a blister to aftercare of an I&D (surgery). As long as the patient is receiving treatment for an active wound that isn't surgical in nature, such as an open wound, it will have a seventh character of A initial visit.

The guidelines state that aftercare of an injury is not to be coded with aftercare Z codes. The surgery did not cause the injury and it is not a complication of the surgery. It is aftercare of an injury.
