Hello,
We have this discussion going on in my office. CPT 27096. CPT 20610, and CPT 77002-26 are being billed by our pain providers (medicare). Some feel that CPT 20610 should have XU and CPT 77002-26 should have XS. Others say CPT 20610 and CPT 77002-26 should have XS modifiers. Any insight would be appreciated. thanks!

Hello Monica,
Per Encoder Pro ..
77002 -26/xu - since XU is like 59 modifier - But here if it's done by same provider and at the same time and in the same report., may be code 27096, and 20610 as S & I is bundled in 27096.
20610 - Why not XS Separate structure.
Just my thoughts..
Thank you. Vijji.

I bill them with XS (because it's a separate structure on the body) but I don't bill for the separate fluoro because it's included in the 27096. I'm not sure if it can be separately billed since it's not included in the 20610, but if you do, I would use XU on the fluoro. I do not use XU on the 20610 because XS seems more specific. They also need LT or RT though I'm not sure if you just omitted that for the sake of your question.

So I would bill 27096-LT and 20610-XS-RT, for example.
