Is it true that if an audit is done and mistakes are found that you, as the coder, can be held accountable for the errors along with the physicians? And as such, that you can be subjected to monetary fines along with the physicians?

I heard that there is an insurance for CPC's, sort of a malpractice insurance for coders. Has anyone heard of this?

Yes it is true. If you go under the Member Benefits tab (same line as My Account, My Chapter, Forums, etc) there is information on the professional liability insurance.

Many employers carrier this on their coders but it is something you should check on to be sure. It is not expensive and if my employer didn't cover me I would have taken it on myself.
