We are having a differing opinion on the correct usage of the Z codes. If a patient has a non traumatic hip replacement due to DJD and they are continuing to be seen past their 90 global period (let's say the 100th day), and still being seen for the acute injury/condition, then I would think the appropriate delayed healing extender should be used.

We are testing a form functionality and a lot of the AfterCare situations are looking to Z codes. If the patient is seen six months out from a total hip replacement due to hip pain... then isn't T84.84xD (pain due to internal ortho device, subsequent) more appropriate than a Z96.642 (Presence of left artificial hip joint)?

In this case wouldn't the Z96.642 be more appropriate to indicate, the presence of artifi hip joint when the pt is being seen for knee pain on the same side, because there is a potential or possible relation?
Thank you

To use the T84.84xD code it would need to be documented as a complication due to the presence of the implant not normal post operative recovery pain. If it were documented as a complication due to the implant and this is the fist to receive active treatment for the complication then you would use T84.84xA.
For normal associated pain due to the surgery and normal recovery use the Z code
Z47.1 followed by Z96.642 (for the left side)
