I work for a nephrology group who sees patients in the hospital as well as office and rehab. I am trying to figure out when we need to add the Z99.2. Is it as soon as the Dr. states we need to place the patient for dialysis? Is it when they first have the first treatment? At what point would you add the code?
 
I would think it would be as soon as they get their first dialysis treatment, my reasoning is that they are not dependent until the first treatment. Guidlines state that Z codes indicate a reason for the encounter. So it is not an encounter until treatment begins. Clear as mud?
