hematochezia is not the same as melena but the code book is stating the same dx code should be used for both K92.1.
melena is a passage of dark, tarry stools containing blood, as the result of upper gastrointestinal bleeding while hematochezia is the presence of fresh blood in stools, often due to lower gastrointestinal bleeding.
Can anyone tell me what they are using for fresh blood in stool or Hematochezia? Our physician is not happy about the fact that Melena is listed next to that code when that is not what the patient has.
thanks!
