I researched this type of scenario, but I can't find an answer...

A patient has a 14cm laceration on his hand. The wound was explored, cleansed and irrigated extensively w/ normal saline; no foreign material removed.
"Closure of superficial layer 4-0 (17 sutures) and closure of muscle 5-0 vicryl (5 sutures)".
Do I code two different complexities on one laceration repair? A simple repair CPT code and a complex repair CPT code (for the muscle?)?
If I need two CPT codes, I realize that I'll need clarification from the ED Dr for length of each repair. Thanks!!

You don't have to code the scenario separately. If the documentation supports intermediate then it will be intermediate. In order to be complex repair the documentation should support more than just a layered sutures.🙂
