Reader Question:

Morphine Injections

Question: We are having problems getting reimbursed for morphine injected through a pump, even when we use the proper morphine J codes. How can we get appropriate reimbursement?

Kansas Subscriber

Answer: Include in the patients chart the total amount of morphine administered as well as a copy of the pump refill report as additional documentation. For example, providers often bill with J2275 (injection, morphine sulfate [preservative-free sterile solution], per 10 mg). The patients record might read Total of 200 mg given; 200 mg = 20 administrations.
