Reader Question:

Focus on Appropriate Angioplasty Code

Question: I have a physician who performed an angioplasty of coronary artery bypass graft but didn’t stent or perform an atherectomy. I am thinking I can report 92937-52-RC (Right coronary artery), but I not sure. Can you help me?

Answer: Since the angioplasty was completed, assuming it was successful, you should report just 92937 (Percutaneous transluminal revascularization of or through coronary artery bypass graft (internal mammary, free arterial, venous), any combination of intracoronary stent, atherectomy and angioplasty, including distal protection when performed; single vessel) with the modifier for the artery/branch involved. If the angioplasty was not successful, then append either modifier 52 (Reduced services) or 53 (Discontinued procedure) based on the reason.
