Reader Question:

Make Room for New Echo Cat. III Code

Question: Are there any Category III codes expected for cardiology this July?

South Dakota Subscriber

Answer: One Cat. III code of particular interest to cardiology coders will be +0439T (Myocardial contrast perfusion echocardiography; at rest or with stress, for assessment of myocardial ischemia or viability (List separately in addition to code for primary procedure]).

This is an add-on code, which you’ll be able to report with primary transthoracic echocardiography codes 93306-93308, 93350, and 93351. Expect the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) not to assign RVUs to +0439T, but to instead allow MACs to decide coverage and payment. The code is effective July 1.

You can review the MPFS update particulars at www.cms.gov/Outreach-and-Education/Medicare-Learning-Network-MLN/MLNMattersArticles/Downloads/MM9633.pdf.
