Confidently Report Resident Care Through End of 2025
Question: Our practice relies on residents to provide some care services. Sometimes we offer patients the option to connect virtually instead of having to come into the office. Can I bill for residents’ services when they provide care via telehealth instead of face to face? South Dakota Subscriber Answer: According to the Medicare Learning Network (MLN) booklet Guidelines for Teaching Physicians, Interns & Residents, published in November 2024 by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), this is allowable for at least the rest of calendar year 2025. MLN says, “We continue to allow teaching physicians to use audio-video telehealth to be present in all teaching settings when the resident provides Medicare telehealth services in all residency training locations through the end of CY 2025.” If your patients are covered by other insurance, like commercial carriers, make sure you check with them individually. Also, check back in to see whether CMS continues to allow residents to perform telehealth services beyond the end of this calendar year. Rachel Dorrell, MA, MS, CPC-A, CPPM, Development Editor, AAPC
