Reader Question:

Choose Your Postpartum Care Code Wisely

Question: Our ob-gyn provided antepartum care for a patient who delivered out of town. Now the physician is seeing the patient for the postpartum visit. I billed antepartum once she delivered with another physician. What postpartum code should I use?

Answer: You should code the postpartum care with 59430 (Postpartum care only [separate procedure]). This represents the six-week checkup after a delivery and is part of the CPT® instruction when you split care out from global coding (such as 59400, Routine obstetric care including antepartum care, vaginal delivery [with or without episiotomy, and/or forceps] and postpartum care).
