Reader Question:

Consider Your ICD-10 Options for Rubella Non-Immune Status

Question: How do you code Rubella non-immune status in a pregnant patient? I can only think of Z78.9 (Other specified health status), but I'm not sure.

Answer: You should go with O09.89 (Supervision of other high risk pregnancies) as this fact puts her at risk for fetal issues should she be exposed to Rubella.

Heads up: You should report this code for antepartum visits. If she has not developed Rubella during her pregnancy and the ultrasounds show no issues with the fetus, you would not be using this code except for initial testing or monitoring the pregnancy until you know there is no problem. So do not use this diagnosis during delivery or while she is in labor.
