How to Isolate Delivery Without Prenatal, Postpartum Care

Question: We deliver patients in the hospital who receive no prenatal care. We perform delivery and any postpartum care in hospital. Should be bill 59409 or 59410? Massachusetts Subscriber Answer: According to CPT® guidelines, you would bill 59409 (Vaginal delivery only [with or without episiotomy and/or forceps]) plus any inpatient visits including discharge management (if provided). Code 59410 (Vaginal delivery only [with or without episiotomy and/or forceps]; including postpartum care) includes both inpatient and outpatient postpartum care.
