Reader Question:

Surrogate Mother Means You Should Submit Your Claim Here

Question: If a surrogate/gestational carrier has insurance with maternity benefits, is the pregnancy filed to the patient’s insurance? Or, are the intended parents responsible for payment?

Answer: The patient is the parent. If she (the surrogate) has maternity coverage, you should bill her pregnancy care to that payer — unless the adoptive parents have a legal agreement in place to reimburse for all care (in which case, you do not bill anyone’s insurance and the adoptive parents pay from their own sources).
