Reader Questions:

Can You Bill Colposcopy During PP Exam?

Question: If a patient has a colposcopy done during her postpartum (PP) exam, is a modifier needed to avoid having it denied as “part of global period?”

Answer: It depends on whether you are also billing for the PP exam that day. If you are, then yes, add a modifier 25 (Significant, separately identifiable evaluation and management service by the same physician or other qualified health care professional on the same day of the procedure or other service) to the code that represents the visit. If you have already billed for global care (which includes PP care) prior to this visit, then no. Just bill the colposcopy.
