Correctly Code This Dental Service in Your Medical Office
Question: My pediatric provider has just started offering fluoride varnish applications preventively to patients. Is this something payers will reimburse? Also, how should I code this service? AAPC Forum Participant Answer: Many payers, including Medicaid, will pay for fluoride varnish applications. Because your provider is performing this service in a medical office, not a dental one, report 99188 (Application of topical fluoride varnish by a physician or other qualified health care professional). Make note: Keep in mind that not all payers will cover this service. Be sure to discuss any coverage issues with parents or guardians when explaining potential out-of-pocket costs.
