The provider fabricates an obturator prosthesis by taking an impression, or negative imprint, of the patient's oral cavity. A definitive obturator prosthesis replaces an interim obturator prosthesis used to close a cavity created in the mouth after a partial or complete surgical resection of the maxilla, or upper jaw bone.
