The provider removes a previously placed implantable defibrillator pulse generator from the patient and replaces it with a new one. He performs this procedure for a patient with leads to at least three chambers of the heart. Defibrillators sense and regulate the heart rate by delivering a mild electric shock when the patient requires it. Components need to be removed when they no longer function properly or when an infection occurs.
