In this procedure, the provider inserts an arteriovenous shunt between an artery and vein. He most often places this shunt in a patient who will receive hemodialysis treatments.  Hemodialysis is a process in which a dialysis machine removes harmful wastes, salt, and fluids from the blood and reinfuses the purified blood back into the patient's circulation.
