Pneumococcal vaccine triggers the immune response of the patient and protects against infection from pneumococcus bacteria, an infectious organism. The provider administers the vaccine to all children younger than five years of age and all adults who are older than 65 years. He also administers the vaccine to individuals of six through 64 years of age with certain medical conditions, like asthma, which is a lung condition.
