The provider removes the portion of the stomach that produces the hormone ghrelin, the hormone believed responsible for the sensation of hunger, and closes the stomach with staples or sutures. The provider avoids gastric bypass to decrease the chance of intestinal obstruction, anemia, osteoporosis, protein deficiency, and vitamin deficiency, typical complications of stomach bypass procedures. He performs this procedure to treat morbid obesity.
