The provider completely removes the urinary bladder, adjoining organs, and pelvic lymph nodes bilaterally. The procedure is most commonly performed as a result of bladder cancer found in more than one area of the bladder, or to treat a recurrence of cancer. The procedure also includes a method to re–route urine by the surgically implanting a ureter into the colon, or joining the urethra to the skin.
