Summary

In this procedure, the provider excises the prostate gland, along with the vas deferens, or duct that carries sperm, through an incision in the skin crease above the pubic bone in the lower abdomen. He also incises and enlarges the urethra, or external urinary duct, and takes measures to prevent blood loss after the procedure. He performs the procedure to treat a tumor or persistent enlargement of the prostate that is obstructing urinary flow and may carry it out in stages, in two separate procedures.
