The provider destroys the superior hypogastric plexus by injecting it with a neurodestructive agent, which may be chemical, thermal, or electrical. The superior hypogastric plexus is part of the thoracolumbar sympathetic chain of the autonomic nervous system. The procedure reduces the patient’s sensation of pelvic pain. This service is done for conditions such as malignancy or endometriosis. The provider may use imaging guidance for this procedure.
