Are there any classes that you can take to learn about auditing charts? I am not sure where you would even begin or what has to be done to audit a chart. It seems like it would be very interesting and helpful in the coding field::)

Chart Auditor

The AAPC offers a study guide for Evaluation and Managment Auditor Specialty Credential

https://www.aapc.com/onlinestore/item-details.aspx?pid=5|19|82&id=194

if you buy that book please let me know what you think of it. I purchased the specialty guide from AAPC for ortho - I'm totally disappointed in it... it's not at all what I expected it to be! Very basic,...no mock test..(in fact ONLY 5 questions!). I have to say, at least for the ortho guide, not worth the paper it's printed on:mad:

oops, sorry - there are 10 mock exam questions - not 5
but not a full mock test nonetheless

Kimb,
The AAPC offers workshops on E/M Auditing. I attended one 2 years ago and it was very helpful. You can search the AAPC website for a workshop in your location.
Good Luck!

Yes, there is a company who actually holds a 2 day class on auditing E/M as well as surgeries. If you'll go to www.doctors-management.com and look under NAMAS it will give you all the information you need. You actually take a test at the end of the 2nd day and if you pass you will be certified through NAMAS as an Medical Auditor. This company is based out of knoxville TN, but they hold classes around the US. The site should have their schedule as well. Doctors Management is wonderful, I actually took my CPC training through them. I hope this helps. Have a great day.

Auditing charts

I purchased the E/M Auditor study guide and was very disappointed in it. It doesn't have enough information in it to teach you auditing basics. If I hadn't already had enough experience in auditing this guide would not have prepared me for the exam. I recommend attending a hands on workshop either through the AAPC or with another reputable company.

Wendy, the specialty guides aren't meant to be basic! They are targeted for the advanced coder. Those who already know the basics. It supposed to focus on the terminolgoy, anatomy, phathophysicology and coding specific to that "specialty".
I was very disappointed in the ORTHO specialty guide as I thought it was too basic, it's stuff I already know! I was expecting something a bit more usefull. I don't know if it means I can be comfortable with the knowledge I have for passing the test OR - if I should find another source for reviewing the ORTHO specialty before taking the exam!
When the ORTHO specialty guide arrived, it was so small it shocked me! It only has 10 questions in it! I was thinking it would have at least a 75 question mock exam!!
anyway - the specialty guides aren't meant to be basic -;)

I found www.EMuniversity.com web site to be very helpful. They have a free tuturial. You can also sign up (free) for a weekly E/M case, where you read over the doctors note & you vote on the level you think it is. Then you click on the answer & they explain each section (history, exam, & medical dicision making). It's a great learning tool.
