Wiki Why not a "Podiatry" heading?

I recently graduated college, passed my CPC exam and now work in a Podiatry office. I was wondering why there isn't a Podiatry heading along with all the others (cardiololgy, pediatrics, etc)? It would be nice to have a place to ask others in this area questions.

That's true Marcia! I have wondered the same thing about Hematology and Oncology. Every speciality is so different and detailed and I think everyone has questions about their speciality. It's funny when I talk to other coders and their speciality is say Anesthesia. They will say if you can code this then you can code anything. It's funny because I have said the same thing about Hematology/Oncology. I think every speciality is hard to conquer and we will always have questions. I have worked in podiatry before also. I know that it is hard keeping up with those diabetic ulcers and all of the things that Medicare won't let you bill for. I think the more demand for the speciality the quicker it will get on the website. Have fun coding!

Any idea where I'd find info relating directly to Podiatry coding? I feel so lost right now and the Medicare website is a nightmare to work through, which leads to feeling even more lost. Currently at this office, the Doctors do the coding (as if they know all the rules lol) and I read the dication to make sure its covered before billing it. I would like to know more to make sure I'm doing it all correctly. I feel more like I'm a data entry person, than an actual coder.

Maybe you could try contacting the AAPC to see if they would consider adding these categories to the forums.

Over in the Social Groups, under the Networking section - I created a Podiatry Group. I thought it would be really helpful to those of us in the Podiatry field to be able to ask questions and get some help from each other.

Podiatry info

One book that I can't live without is Ingenix Podiatry coding companion. It's a great book with descriptions of what is entailed in each procedure. Also if you get a chance to attended a seminar by McVey with speaker Michael Warsaw take it. He's a practicing podiatrist plus a certified coder.

If your podiatrist is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) or American Academy of Podiatric Practice Management (AAPPM) they have great coding information for podiatry. If your poditrist is a member of the APMA after working in the podiatry field you will qualify to become a member of American Society of Podiatric Medical Assistants (ASPMA) who also has some good podiatric resources.
