We are having issues with billing Outpatient Hospital Observation codes. The insurance companies do not want to accept 99217, 99218, 99219, We cannot bill as inpatient because they are outpatient hospital visits. Do you have any other practice with same issues and do you have any advice on billing these. We are even wondering if we can use codes 99213. 99214 and bill as outpatient hospital visits. Please advice on this:confused:....

observation

only the attending can bill for the initial observation visit. All others have to bill a subsequent observation visit.

:confused:Is it the admitting provider or the attending the can bill for observation status, ER physician request specialist consult, then enters order for observation status under the specialist service and list specialist as the attending and himself as the admitting provider.

Hi,
If you're physician is "ATTENDING ONLY" you are allowed to use Obv codes.

If your physician is called in as consult then you use E/M Office Visit codes and change pos to 22.
