Hello, I have a two part question. The hospice coding world is different than normal coding having said that my First question is-Can we code a sequelae (such as I69.954) as a primary. Second question. The nurses insist that an MI should be current at all times and that I should be able to code it as an active diagnosis. I disagree. Which is correct, if either of us. Thank you.

As far as I am aware you may code a sequelae as a primary. In regards to the MI code, if the MI is older then 4 weeks and is "healed" and has no current symptoms then you would code I25.2. There is also a note in my book that states "If there are still symptoms after four weeks, assign I25.9."

Hope this helps!
