Good morning,
That's my first time asking question here so I'm not sure where I should post my question. I have a coding question how would you code for the following:
Patient was admitted to a monitored bed on 8/22/2016. It happened around 11:30 p.m. when the patient was examined and evaluated in the emergency department. After that, the patient was admitted to a monitored bed and subsequently the patient coded early hours of the morning on 8/23/2016 and could not be revived. ACLS protocol was followed, and the patient expired?
Could someone please tell me how would I code this? I'm doing inpatient physician coding E/M.

Thank you,
A

Yountreat as any other inpatient encounter. If you are coding formthenadmit then code an admit, if you are coding the discharge then code a discharge if thensame provider performed the admit and the discharge then code for admit and discharge on same day. Just because the patient did not walk out of the hospital, does not mean it was not a discharge.
I am not sure if that answers your question or not.

Sorry I do have another question, I'm coding for admit and discharge even though the patient was admitted on 8/22/16 at 11:30 and expired on 8/23/16 at 7:30 I still code admit and discharge on the same dame?
thank you,

I would use the day of death as your dc day. I see in your first message patient was admitted to a monitored bed.. Is this truly an inpatient or an observation patient? not sure without the chart. also you can use occurrence code 55 for Medicare on the UB04, this states date of death.
