Wiki Coronavirus Screening Code

I don't know whether CDC has or even will recommend codes for this, but the correct code would be Z11.59 - encounter for screening for other viral diseases. But keep in mind that a screening is testing of an asymptomatic patient - I'm not aware that screening tests have been recommended or are being performed widely at this point in the outbreak. If the patients are being tested due to presenting with some kind of respiratory symptoms or other suspected exposure, then it would not be a screening service and would be coded with the appropriate symptom or exposure code (e.g. Z20.828 - contact with and (suspected) exposure to other viral communicable diseases).

Screening COVID-19 Z03.818; contact with and suspected COVID-19 Z20.828; Coronavirus infection, unspec B34.2; Other disease due to coronavirus B97.29

Per CDC guidance, Z03.818 is for an encounter for observation for suspected exposure to other biological agents ruled out. This Dx cannot be used for screening as the code description states it was ruled out. It also states that B34.2 is generally not appropriate for COVID-19. Either report Z20.828 for actual exposure to someone who is confirmed to have COVID-19 or the signs and symptoms should be reported.
