2021 E/M Office visit if patient is not present

I need some assistance, Can we code/bill E/M office visit if patient is not present?

You posted in the behavioral health forum, so I'm guessing this is a behavioral health question. There are codes for therapy without the patient, if that is what is being done. You may want to clarify who is being seen and why, and why the patient is not there.

It is an E/M visit, posted on the behavioral site as this case was a Psychiatric f/u.... a family member only was on the f/u visit, patient was not present... the documentation doesn't state the reason as to why the patient is not present .... it states: I met with patient's father ... any help will be appreciated.. Thank you.

If the patient isn't there, and there is no reason in the visit note why the patient isn't there, then I code that as a cash pay visit.
