Im wondering what the correct practice is when a pt is double covered and the primary left $36 to patient responsibility, then the secondary left $44. Which is the correct amount to leave to pt?
 
Im wondering what the correct practice is when a pt is double covered and the primary left $36 to patient responsibility, then the secondary left $44. Which is the correct amount to leave to pt?

How much did the secondary pay?

The patient's responsibility was $36 after the primary insurance paid. Subtract the secondary payment from $36, and then the remaining portion is the patient responsibility.

Example - If the secondary insurance paid $10: $36 - $10 = $26. Bill the patient for $26.
