Hello,

If a patient comes in for office today for a tubal ligation consult, which is the proper dx? Z30.2 or Z30.8. Being told that since it's a consult and not the actual tubal that Z30.8 should be used. Please give your thoughts.

I asked ACOG this question and this was their response

The diagnosis to be assigned will depend on exactly what took place during the encounter. If a contraception discussion was held concerning multiple options (of which sterilization was one option), the appropriate diagnosis is Z30.09. If the only topic during this encounter was sterilization, then Z30.2 is the appropriate diagnosis.

I have used Z30.02 for the discussion and Z30.2 for the actual procedure performed
