I received CPC-A in May 2024. I work at a state hospital since 2009 as a medical records clerk. I already put my foot in the door so I thought it wouldn’t be that hard to get a coding position. But it is impossible to get a coding position even in my own hospital. They only hire people with coding experience. I asked the coding manager in my own hospital personally and they reached out to human resource department. And they said no. I asked if I could get only training without pay after work. I am happy to do training after work or weekend as a volunteer. Even this is denied. I can not afford leaving my current job because I need to feed my family. I am looking for a coding volunteer opportunities. Can anyone provide me a medical coding volunteer positions?

I would check with the billing department, or another company. Being an AR rep or in billing can get your A removed and get some experience in that field.

I am also in the same boat.. I have worked as a Procedure Scheduler for over 15 years. I too have applied for a position for a coding job and was denied. I am not sure what to do at this point.

Oh, I did see a volunteer coder position on Linked In months ago. You seem to be best positioned at your current hospital. If things don't change, is there another possibly larger organization that you could even make a lateral move, perhaps? Expand your network. Get involved with the local AAPC chapters, and talk to other coders, find out which places hire within the most, if you can.

I am also in the same boat. I finished my CPC-A in August 2024. I am working as scheduler/Registrar. I am applied entry level coder job. I need some recommendations for how to find a coder job. Thank you.
That's the best way to get your foot in the door, honestly. I've been looking into something similar, in a health system or company that also hires coders. Geisinger, I think, in your area, is someone to watch. I'm watching the local and bigger health companies. A mistake I made earlier in my career, was taking a coding-adjacent job, but not a place that hires ACTUAL coders. I believe this is the key.

I already tried with Geisinger. My application is not selected. How do I land on Coder job.

Sorry to hear that. I don't understand this thinking. They would rather hire outside instead of giving a 15 year internal employee (who took steps to further educate themselves and learn & earned a CPC-A) a chance? This is so backwards. When I worked as a coding manager I encouraged those that were not coders in the RCM or other areas to pursue CPB, CPC, etc. so they COULD move into coding roles. Promoting within and training up internal employees should be a focus. They don't have entry level coding roles? Makes no sense. Have you checked to see if you could get a billing, customer service or other RCM role and then move up?
