I keep running into the same unspecified finding for the chest xrays I am coding. I keep coming up with different codes, forums etc on the proper way to code such a broad finding. I starting using R91.8 but then questioned if that was more for findings of nodules not opacities. Does anyone have any guidance on how to properly code these types of findings?

The dx. code R94 covers general "Abnormal results of function studies," or dx R93 dx block abnormal findings in Xray of body structures which may include imaging or other diagnostic tests showing an unexplained abnormality. A more specific code is always preferred if more information is known.
I hope this data helps you.

In med onc we use R91.8 (general) and R91.1 (nodule) often for abnormal imaging of the lungs. R91.8. It does seem unspecific but if there's no diagnosis and it's abnormal then it should suffice.
