Hi All,

I am new to coding and coding for a CRNA who administered anesthesia during a Central Venous Port Removal completed by a different provider. The code 36590 for the procedure is not showing a crosswalk to an anesthesia code and I'm trying to figure out how to code this. Would this be a moderate sedation code 99156/99157 according to time?
My anesthesia documentation and surgeon's report state MAC administration was administered.

Thank you!

Hi there, you can't report MAC as moderate sedation. What source are you using for the crosswalk information? The ASA Crosswalk indicates 00400. You will need these books to code anesthesia services: www.asahq.org/shop-asa/mk2026combo
Thank you for your help with this! I have been using Optum Encoder Pro. We have noticed some differences between this platform versus Select Coder and it has made me wonder which one has the more accurate information.

I wonder if it is a difference in subscription levels? I pulled that crosswalk code from a SelectCoder subscription level that includes the ASA's crosswalk information, which is the only official crosswalk source. (Full disclosure, I work for the company that owns SelectCoder. But I do think anesthesia coders need the books direct from the ASA.)

Please know the Optum encoder is not a reliable source for crosswalking from CPT to ASA codes. The best and most reliable resource is the ASA crosswalk that will take you to 00400 for this procedure. It's highly recommended you request a version of the ASA crosswalk from your employer. It comes in hard copy or as an spreadsheet.
