Wiki Anemia induced by chemotherapy

We're trying to help a fellow coder on this one....If the doctor states that the patient has anemia due to the chemotherapy.....do you code it to the 285.3 or 284.89? There's some confusion going on, so any other opinions would be greatly appreciated!

ICD-285.3 is used only in the case when a pateint is suffering from a cancer and is being treated with chemotherapy, which caused anemia (chemo drug side effect)
Whereas 284.89 is coded only when there is a confirm diagnosis of aplastic anemia which is caused due adverse effect of chemotherapy

In this case if the cancer is in its current state then code 285.3.

Thanks Manas! We really appreciate it!!! We're currently having a denial for our 99214 w/ICD9 162.3 & 285.3, the insurance (not Medicare) is denying as invalid DX?????

Remember: For services on or after October 1, you’ll be able to report 285.3 (Antineoplastic chemotherapy induced anemia) instead of 284.89 when chemotherapy causes anemia. So check out the DOS(date of service)
I think you forgot to add E933.1 (Drugs, medicinal and biological substances causing adverse effects in therapeutic use; antineoplastic and immunosuppressive drugs) so add this ICD and refile the claim.

Ok, thanks for the information.....but can you direct us to that resource that states we can use the 285.3 w/E933.1, so we can have it in writing and educate all parties that need to know.....
