We were transitioning from one tax id to another in 2009. Commercial carriers accepted the change effective 7-1-09. It didnt go into effect with Medicare until 01-01-2010 because of the lengthy paperwork trail.

question: if we billed commercial carrier with new tax id and the patient has Mcare 2ndry, is it legal to change the tax id on the claim form to the old one so Mcare will pay?
Vice versa Mcare is prime so we used the old tax id so when the claim gets to the 2ndry they deny because the old tax id is invalid in their system. Im being asked why cant we just change it?

I would advise you to go straight to your carrier on this one. I've never dealt with anything like this personally but I would be leary of changing tax ids.
