There is a new excludes 1 note on K63.5 (polyp of colon) and all D codes (adenomas of colon). As anyone who codes endoscopies knows, it's very common for hyperplastic polyps to exist along with adenomatous polyps, in the same area of the colon or in other areas... so I am confused as to why this edit was put into place. I know there is an exclusion that states if the two conditions are not related they can be reported together. Has anyone had any luck appealing this edit stating the exclusion? Has anyone considered disputing this edit? Curious as to what other endoscopy coders think, especially when the hyperplastic and andenomatous polyps are in different sections of the colon. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I had the same question during an audit. The audit company has sent a query to AHA to get official guidelines on this. I will post as soon as they respond.
