Hi all, I'm reviewing a UB-04 that's already been coded and the DRG (Box 71 PPS Code) is 7914. Aren't all DRGs only 3 digits? I'm new to coding so maybe there are other uses for this box I'm not aware of.

A little enlightenment would be so appreciated!

Oh, other pertinent information:
1) Inpatient bill
2) Payer is Medicaid
3) Date of service was early 2016, so v34 I think
3) ...anything else that would be helpful?

Thank you!

Mark

I am hoping you found an answer to this already but it sounds like this was an APR-DRG claim. They have DRGs with severity codes of 1, 2, 3, or 4 at the end.
Best of luck,

Kat

It would not be an APG for an inpatient claim. Here is what the Medicare instructions for the UB-04 as revised 2017 states regarding FL 71:

FL71 – Prospective Payment System (PPS) Code
Not used. Data entered will be ignored.

I can only guess that this is something then specific to your Medicaid payer. You might check with the IT department as It may bean automatic code they generate based on the payer.
