If the GI provider documents 2mm flat polyp found in ascending colon and a polypectomy was performed with cold snare, tissue sample place in jar would you code the 45385 or 45380?? Everything I have read states if a complete polypectomy was performed then 45385 would be coded. Which one should be used???

Thanks
RW

45385 - cold or hot snare biopsy
45380- cold or hot foreceps biopsy

this is how I always code my colonoscopies with biopsy.

Thank you. This is how I have been coding them but was told it was wrong on an audit. Everything that I have read leads to those codes. Thanks

I always code according to how the polyps was removed - snare vs. biopsy forceps. This information is (or should always be) included in the colonoscopy report.
