We have an order for bilateral hips for hip pain on an 11yo. Our tech says since this is the same protocol for 72170, 1-2v pelvis, it should be billed as that since the old 73540 child hips code is deleted. AP and frog-leg views were taken with both hips on one film, the same as for the old 73540. Would you code this as 72170 or 73521?

Thank you for your advice.

Hips v pelvis

I would use the bilateral hip code since that is how it is ordered and the hips are the focus of the exam. I think that is the purpose of the new codes. The definition also indicates with or without AP pelvis. I have already run into a few scenarios with this that raise questions.

Thanks!
Amy

I'm not super familiar with views but I read Frog Leg is a lateral view so AP & Lateral = 2 views. I say bilateral hip code as well. The fact the whole pelvis can be captured in the same frame due to patient size shouldn't direct code selection.
