Hi,

Need help in coding aftercare care following fracture, 4 days back pt was dx with a radial fracture and prescribed Vicodin, Pt states he did not follow up with the oncall orthopedist and he ran out of pain medicine today encounter for left non-displaced radial fracture with prescription refill and administered IM in this encounter. what is the encounter type active(A)as given IM in facility or Subsequent(D) came for prescription refill? please clarify.

I see where you're going with this, but I'd be inclined to say D because the active treatment was "completed". Providing meds for pain management would be a routine part of the healing process, leading to the use of the D.

7th character D

7th character D would be more appropriate considering no active treatment for the fracture as per icd 10 cm guideline.
