Would anyone be able to point me to a resource where it defines a thyroid biopsy as 88307 or 88305? Per the CPT book we are to use 88307 when the total Thyroid or Thyroid lobe is biopsied. It doesn't specify for a smaller piece. A few of us are of the opinion that should be 88305 and the Pathologist wants more concrete evidence as he has been using 88307. I have also found something on super coder that says if a specimen is not specifically mentioned under a code you look at similar specimens, but need something a little more concrete. If anyone could help that would be greatly appreciated!

I also work in a pathology practice and our rule is that biopsy-88305 or resection/lobectomy 88307 must be noted in the final diagnosis.
