Hello everyone,

Can 88312, 88313 or 88342 be billed w/ 88321 ( consultation and report on referred slides prepared elsewhere) if the slides were received unstained and the pathologists decides to perform stain on it however, did not actually prepare the slide? 88323- is only in the event the pathologist prepares the slide so we do not feel it is correct to bill that code. Any feedback is appreciated , thanks.

Yes, you may bill stain codes (88312, 88313, 88342) with consultation code 88321 if slides were received unstained and the consulting pathologist decides to perform a stain. This combination is on the NCCI edits list, so you will need to apply a modifier.

That's what I thought, thank you very much Kathleen for your help-, have a great evening!
