Hello! I'm new to coding for psychiatry and I'm looking for information on when to use the 90792 vs. a new pt E/M code 99201-99205? CPT doesn't give a clear definition of the documentation requirements for 90792 and everything I'm finding on-line says they can be used interchangeably or under "certain" circumstances, but nothing specifically outlines how to decide between the two. Any help anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

An E/M code and 90792 can not be billed on the same day by the same provider (per CPT guidelines). The guidelines for the codes 90791 & 90792 are in the paragraphs just prior to the codes. I hope this helps.

I understand that these cannot be billed on the same date, but I'm wondering what the documenation requirements are for 90792. Do ROS need to be documented like in a NP E/M code?

Try looking for the LCD on Psychiatry and Psychology Services to clarify documentation requirements. I have the LCD but your FI may be different. (Michigan/Indiana LCD ID,
L30489.)
