Hi all,

When a psychiatrist (MD) is conducting a diagnostic interview examination, Should 90801 get reported or a consultation code (all consultation criteria met) also (DOS is 2009)?

According to CPT Assistannt, March 2002: ..."These codes [90801] are not intended to be used by physicians. Instead, physicians performing these services may indentify their efforts by choosing the E/M codes appropriate to the type and level of service being provided"

My understanding is that consultation should be reported, but I am questioning myself =). (It's becasue AXIS are being established).

Any thoughts??? Thanks!!

If another dr asked the psych to do a consult than its a consult. If its just a new patient to the dr, I would bill the 90801. Ultimately it comes down to the notes and what's documented.
