Can anyone tell me if you can bill 90853 more than once per session in a day?
My provider said that 90853 should be on one line item and then bill a 2nd 90853 on a 2nd line item with a modifier 59
I have searched for this to get something in writing, but have found nothing

She will have at least a 2 to 3 group session

By that I mean, she will meet with the group for an hour, than have a break, then meet with the group again for another hour and will sometimes take another break and then will meet with the group for a third time

My experience is that 90853 is only allowed once per day, even with the -59 modifier.

In this scenario it should be billed only once it was the therapist taking a break not the patient seeing different therapists for different reasons

Hi Mahes,
Group therapy can be done 2 times BUT by different mental health providers on same day. Let s say morning have use of CPT 90853 but about dx F10 Alcoholism & F32 Depression with by LCSW provider. Then 3 pm have another group CPT 90853 for Paranoia F22, and dx F51.3 Insomnia due to dx B20 HIV disease with Psychiatrist These could be on separate claims since differ providers.
I hope helped you. Oh yes Id not use modifier 59 but on 2nd claim use modifier 27 if outpatient status.
Lady
