when EKG is order the dx is palpations but when provider reads the EKG is normal. Do you use the Z13.6 for screening or the palpations dx OR both?

I'd code palpitations. We used to use Z13.6 and got a lot of denials because it's not appropriate to use with 93010.

You can code the dx for the palpitations since that was the reason for the EKG and the EKG results were normal. The patient can clinically have palpitations even if the EKG checks out okay. I wouldn't use a screening code by itself or with the palpitations code since screenings are for patients with no signs/symptoms of disease.

I completely agree with Kim. Use the symptoms for the EKG and not a Z code.
